The opening sequence particularly, narrated by Koehler, while filled with some overly dramatic and trite dialogue, is the best representation of a dream I’ve seen since “The Sopranos”. This is where Andrew Getty’s genius is grandly displayed. Much of the film involves nightmares and unreality. Every awful scene seemed to be matched by one that captivated and genuinely terrified me. Despite all this the film is mesmerizing and there is true genius at work behind it’s glaring flaws. Whether this was due to a production that started and stopped several times over a decade or amateur direction and writing is up in the air. The acting from nearly everyone involved, with the notable exception of Frederick Koehler’s fantastic performance, is pretty bad. The narrative structure of the film is all over the place with muddled character motivations and scenes that go on for far too long with little to no point. Andrew Getty may well have been a creative genius, aspects of this film attest to that, but he was an untrained filmmaker and his inexperience shows. Let me start off by saying that this film is technically flawed from start to finish. When John brings home an antique mirror Dennis begins to have conversations with an entity inside of it that starts to slowly twist him into a ruthless killer. His caretaker brother John (Sean Patrick Flanery) is torn between his responsibilities to Dennis and his relationship with longtime girlfriend Lydia (Dina Meyer) who wants John to commit Dennis so that they can start a new life together. The story revolves around Dennis (Koehler), a mentally handicapped young man who has terrible nightmares that he’s convinced are being whispered to him by someone or something in his sleep. The genesis of this film is the stuff of Hollywood legend and the end product is indeed a fascinating piece of art that deserves to be seen. The main star of the film, Frederick Koehler, even recalls Getty eating cereal at dinner for weeks because he’d sunk every dime he had into the production. He built custom camera rigs, renovated his home where much of the filming took place and even built huge, custom animatronic set pieces. He meticulously worked on every aspect of the film while, at the same time, draining his considerable fortune in the effort to produce his masterwork. Enter a twisted world filled with anxiety-inducing thrills and disturbing horrors around every corner. For fifteen years “The Evil Within” was the all consuming obsession of oil heir Andrew Getty all the way up to his untimely death in 2015. Survive encounters with sadistic enemies and meet characters who may lead - or mislead - you on your path to redemption. GAME DESCRIPTION: From mastermind Shinji Mikami and the talented team at Tango Game works, The Evil Within 2 takes the acclaimed franchise to a new level with its unique blend of psychological thrills and true survival horror. My hopes/expectations are instantly diminished the second I see a movie like this. I'll be straight up with you, I wasn't really expecting much from this. I'm not gonna focus on that in this review, at least that's what I'm hoping for. And don't even get me started on the whole white savior angle, which is another thing entirely. That pretty much describes this movie right down to a T. In that movie, a skinny white boy who's a massive martial arts film buff, finds himself transported to ancient China, where he is forced to learn to be better at martial arts than the actual experts in record time and save the locals from nefarious villains. This is very much a retread of the Forbidden Kingdom. It's a stupid way to tell it, yes, but that's the story they wanted to tell. Typical, but that's the way they wanted to tell their story. But you know the drill here, the lead character (who loves video games) is a bullied geek who can't defend himself, a virgin and hasn't kissed a girl yet. I don't really know where I'm going with this or why I started out with this, since the video game stuff comprises, maybe, 10% of the whole movie and maybe even less. It's not like an Assassin's Creed, which adapts an already established story. The only movie you could say that's great is Wreck-it Ralph and that movie is inspired by video games as a whole. In fact, you could argue that man of these movies are absolutely horrid. As far as video game adaptations or movies with video games as part of their plot, let's just say that they haven't yet hit their stride. I've owned so many gaming consoles and bought (or at least my mom bought most of them for me in my youth) so many games that I don't even know what to do with them anymore. They are among my favorite hobbies, if not my favorite one. I believe I have made it clear, in one of my previous reviews, that I've played video games almost my entire life. This will never happen again, until it does. Finally I am able to finish watching the last movie from last week's debacle. Then after the no parachute jump I said, well, I’ve always wanted to do this. I had to think about it a little bit, and then I had my neighbor draw a picture of two airplanes in a dive with the drogue chutes behind them and two jumpers switching planes like that. When you become a Red Bull athlete, they ask you to provide some projects that you would like to do before your career’s over. It was just a dream to be able to do something like that, and originally it was just a skydive next to a plane. And I just remember that as a kid and I always had that picture and I always wanted to do a version of that. And there was a guy in a big floppy yellow jumpsuit skydiving next to the airplane. You mentioned working on projects like this, but how did you come up with the specific idea behind Plane SwapĪikins: When I was in high school in the early ‘90s there was a picture in a parachute magazine-it was the only thing you can get that shows skydiving-there was a parachutist with a Stearman biplane engine in a dive at the ground, and there was a drogue chute, which is like a round parachute behind it, holding it up so it could go slower. I mean, everybody wants to do what their dad does as a kid, right? It wasn’t so much for me if I was gonna jump, it was when. And then they started their own club and my dad learned to jump with my aunt, Andy’s mom. So he and a buddy in the ‘60s went out to a skydiving club, and he made a jump and they fell in love with it. When he came home from the war he really wondered what it would’ve been like that day to jump out it was always in the back of his mind. He crash-landed in allied territory in his P-47. My grandpa got shot down in the war and he always wondered what it would’ve been like to open up the cockpit and jump out. When did you first decide that skydiving was something that you wanted to pursue professionally?Īikins: I’m a third-generation skydiver. ( This conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.) Plane Swap will be exclusively streamed live on Hulu in the US on April 24. RED BULL SPACE DROP PROFESSIONALWhy would people do something like this? Well, for more on the upcoming Plane Swap project next month and to learn a bit about Aikin’s career as a professional skydiver, read my conversation with him and Paolo Iscold below. RED BULL SPACE DROP FREEConventional wisdom would tell you that jumping from 25,000 feet in the air sans parachute is about as crazy as it gets, but my afternoon in SLO proved that it’s possible to push those limits even further and to risk even more.įor Plane Swap, the dive is just half the battle, as once the break is in position and they are perpendicular to the ground, Aikins and Farrington will jump out of their planes and free fall alongside the aircrafts while attempting to swap planes mid air, regain control, and then land them both safely. For a guy like Aikins, he is always in search of the next thrill, or the next project to satisfy his hunger of constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world of skydiving. I got to spend an afternoon with Aikins in San Luis Obispo, CA at a Red Bull hangar where we went skydiving out of a helicopter and I got to learn about his next project, dubbed Plane Swap. That someone was Luke Aikins, a Red Bull Air Force stalwart who became famous by jumping into a net without a parachute from 25,000 feet in the air. Well, two weeks later I found myself strapped up to one of the most prolific skydivers in the entire world, someone who has jumped out of a plane or a helicopter over 20,000 times. I barely liked flying Delta from New York to Chicago, why on earth would I jump out of a perfectly good plane? Almost immediately, everyone in the group shot him down, myself very much included. On a random Tuesday afternoon, a friend of mine messaged our group chat and asked if everyone was finally ready to go skydiving. I was frequently talking to my team about managing their work/life balance, about “switching off”, “taking care of themselves”, and “managing energy”, yet they were still receiving emails from me at 6am or 10pm, and were seeing me dabbing my lips at the start of a Zoom call because I had just finished eating. This made me start to think about the shadow I was casting. I was exhibiting the kind of bad behaviours that I saw people writing about on LinkedIn, but of which I was taking no notice. I am not entirely sure that we would treat any of our friends to a spread from Fortnum & Masons, but the gesture was dramatic enough for the message to hit home.īeing home alone I was not only eating lazily, I was also working long and erratic hours. The aim was to wake me up to the fact that I should be treating myself the way that I would treat my friends. My partner, like me, does not place a tremendous value on material things nor on grandiose gestures, but one day, out of the blue he sent me a food-hamper from Fortnum & Masons. Instead of a keyboard I now have more of a smörgåsbord. And our IT department will probably have a fit when they see the amount of food I have dropped on my laptop. My meals also progressed (or declined, depending on your point of view) towards things that were prepared rapidly and could be eaten from one bowl. During our daily Zoom calls I would often be seen munching as we chatted. Having the house to myself meant that I could pretty much carve out my own timetable, including mealtimes, and because we were still very busy in Cranfield, I gravitated to the habit of eating my meals at my computer. This might seem rather esoteric, but plenty of treatises on leadership have been written about “the shadow we cast as leaders”, and the unwitting influences we can have, simply by our behaviours being observed by our followers.Īt the start of the Covid crisis, due to unfortunate circumstances my partner and I ended up in lockdown in different countries, and it was clear we were not going to be together for quite some time. 影Yǐng means “shadow”, and 响Xiǎng means “to make a sound”, so to influence someone is all about the sound that your shadow makes. The Mandarin word for “Influence” is made up of two individual characters, 影响,pronounced “Yǐngxiǎng”.
